celebrating the willingness-choice project of
Katie's Bike is a London-based company
featuring bike chain jewelry.
It is created, engineered, and managed
by my dear friend, Katie.
She is, quite literally, a one-woman creative prodigy
who gathers, makes, and sells
all her product by bike, and by hand.
this is a story about Katie's Bike.
she always loved riding her bike
sometimes she'd slip out in early morning
for an anonymous hour
petting the pavement beneath her tires.
it was a voyager
to get on, and choose where to go
even during those years working in central London.
maybe it was her way of anchoring herself to the day.
or maybe it was her way of freeing herself to it
now it serves as a kind of thread.
to reclaim salvagables from the local bike workshops.
slippery, cold, tiny knobs
waiting to be told into something.
she always made these little collages
she had this sort of cunning dexterity
for piecing together old scraps.
Woven and wedged between the faces of textured matter
these creative bits held together some kind of special story.
some of them were unwanted stories -
a skinned piece of cardboard
with its ribbed nubs poking through its half torn sheet.
others were borrowed -
a quick snip of yarn
coiled over a desk corner
others were taken -
a slice of a post it
whose fragmented letters failed to form words
but stood still like tiny little creatures frozen in motion.
and still others were offered -
a white feather
whose silky hairs bowed under touch.
sometimes you would find one of these clever little presents, comfortably leaning against the side of your pencil case.
there was something curious about it.
like it was hiding something really special.
and if you could just turn it. the right. way. no. flip it. other-
Katie's jewelry binds together a story
but it isn't just her story.
some of them are reclaimed, others offered.
it is an orchestra of a million other little stories
that she draws together with a kind of playful caringness
because Katie knows that -
the story is better
when we choose how to tell it
