HOW WE MAKE
celebrating the willingness-choice project of
this is zuhal.
I am 16, going on 17
- insert sound of music soundtrack here -
Innocent as a rose!
zuhal lives in a boarding school in Muallimkoy, not so far from Istanbul.
A godforsaken yet oddly quaint village.
as any typical student would, she spends most of her time with schoolwork and essays, or part-time jobs
That I oh so masochistically chose to add to my schedule.
but what she would rather be doing is
Locking myself in the art room for a good 8 hours, breathing in the smell of thinner and chocolate chip cookies.
More about those cookies though:
I love food in every way possible.
I love to cook it, taste it, stuff my face with it,
photograph it, paint it.
we find that zuhal's love for food
extends beyond the standard sensorial thresholds of typical experience
I find that most people view eating and drinking as a necessity - something that you do to keep yourself alive,
something that enables you
to go on with your mundane life.
but zuhal believes that
Even a glass of water can be exciting
if you know how to spice it up.
That's what I love about food,
it's one of the rare areas of life in which you truly have no limitations.
That, friends, might just be the most unnecessarily dramatic sentence
I have ever written.
we doubt so
of course we asked zuhal what her favorite ice cream flavor is
Mint chip - and I would love to have a couple of pints of it next to my easle...
it's hard to imagine how zuhal finds time
to spend next to her easle
but she does -
because life is better
when we choose how to live it.
We spend a large part of our lives doing things
we think we are supposed to do.
We go to college, have professional careers,
get married, buy houses, and have kids.
It isn't wrong to do those things.
but it is wrong to be held hostage
by the idea that we must do those things.
